Generally, the diameter of molybdenum wire is measured by inches or mils.

 

For thin molybdenum wires the diameter is from 0.001 inches up to 0.020 inches. The size of the molybdenum wire is measured by weight per unit length. The standard diameter tolerance of the molybdenum wire is ± 3% of the weight measurement. For mandrel applications, the tolerance is normally ± 1%. The equation to calculate the diameter is D (in mils) = 0.98648 x square root (mg weight / 200mm length).

 

For thicker wires the diameter is from 0.020 inches up to 0.250 inches. The inch or mil measurements are used. The tolerances are expressed as a percentage of the diameter. The standard tolerance is ± 1.5%. there are some other useful equations, such as m/kg = 194628 / (diameter in mils)2, mg/200mm = 1.0276 × (diameter in mils)2 and so on.
